  • To the Lighthouse

    Virginia Woolf, Nicole Kidman

Audio CD (Brilliance Audio, July 22, 2014)
To the Lighthouse is Virginia Woolf’s arresting analysis of domestic family life, centering on the Ramsays and their visits to the Isle of Skye in Scotland in the early 1900s. Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge, Eyes Wide Shut), who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Woolf in the film adaptation of Michael Cunningham’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Hours, brings the impressionistic prose of this classic to vibrant life.Split into three parts, the story observes Mrs. Ramsay, Mr. Ramsay, and their children at their vacation house on the Isle of Skye. While the novel follows seemingly trivial events between the family members, the plot takes a backseat to philosophical introspection, which gave the novel its fame as an icon of modernist literature. The Ramsays' quest to recapture meaning creates a powerful allegory of man’s impermanent battle with the tangible world. To the Lighthouse is part of Audible’s A-List Collection, featuring the world’s most celebrated actors narrating distinguished works of literature that each star helped select.

  • To the Lighthouse

    Virginia Woolf, Vanessa Redgrave

Audio CD (BBC Audiobooks, Oct. 1, 2007)
Dramatized here by Vanessa Redgrave and a full cast, To the Lighthouse is a great literary achievement, and Virginia Woolfs most popular novel. This semi-autobiographical novel is based on her recollections of family holidays in Cornwall. From the seemingly trivial postponement of a visit to a nearby lighthouse, Virginia Woolf constructs a moving examination of the complex tensions and allegiances of family life. The novel is split into three sections. In the first, the gracious and imaginative Mrs. Ramsay and her self-centered and absurd husband are preparing for a dinner party, where the guests include a philosopher, a young couple, and painter Lily Briscoe (based on Virginia Woolfs sister Vanessa). In the second section the story moves on to after the war and we discover that Mrs. Ramsay, her son and one of the guests have died. In the last section Lily Briscoe finally achieves what she has been trying to do with her painting and Mr. Ramsay and the children reach the lighthouse -- a trip planned in the first section that only now reaches fruition.
